Gaza & Israel, Explained is a plain-English guide to the history behind today’s news: what is happening, how it started, and why it is so hard to stop. It is told in ten short chapters that take about 35 minutes to read, from the place and its people and the arrival of two national movements in the 1880s, through 1948, 1967, the uprisings and peace talks, Hamas and the blockade, October 7, 2023, and the war in Gaza, to the ceasefire and the questions that still make peace so hard.
I built it for myself first. On a subject this sensitive, most of what reaches us is noise: slogans, outrage and selective facts, each side talking past the other. I wanted to understand the subject deeply, from the ground up, rather than absorb whichever version was loudest that week. Writing it down, chapter by chapter, with sources for every number, was the way to do that.
The site tries to stay balanced by showing how each side sees the same events — 1948 is independence for Israelis and the Nakba for Palestinians, and both readings are given. It adds a map through time, key numbers with their sources, a timeline and a glossary of the words that carry the most weight. It has no ads, no tracking and no cookies.
